Frequently Asked Questions What's it like being in hypnosis? It is quite an ordinary experience. In fact you will have already experienced what hypnosis is like in your everyday activities. Daydreaming is hypnosis. When you are reading a book, staring out of a window or driving a car, you are in hypnosis. You seem oblivious to what is going on around you, yet you are in complete control. We experience hypnosis throughout the day whether we are aware of it or not. Will you have control of my mind? Certainly not! The client is in complete control at all times. You will never say or do anything whilst in hypnosis that you wouldn't want to say or do when in a normal waking state and you can never be made to reveal any secret information. For this reason, nobody can be forced to accept suggestions and a professional and ethical hypnotherapist would never attempt to do so. Will I remember everything that is said to me? Yes and no. You will remember some things but not all. This is the way our memory works normally. For example when you listen to a speech or a talk you may have started off listening to the person speaking but you never remember everything that has been said. Scientific research indicates that consciously we only retain about 30% of what we hear - subconsciously, however, we retain everything. Does hypnosis involve drugs? Absolutely not - nor will I wave a watch chain in front of you! All that happens is that you close your eyes and listen to what I say to you. You will soon begin to relax and drift into a very pleasant hypnotic trance. Are there any side effects? Only positive ones. Physically, levels of the stress hormone adrenaline will reduce in your body which will lead to a safe reduction in heart rate and blood pressure. Mentally you will become more calm and relaxed and over a period of time your ability to cope with everyday stress will improve, thus facilitating the changes you wish to make to your life. Are you qualified to practice hypnotherapy? Yes - having followed a first career in marine biology I trained with LCI, one of the UK's leading hypnotherapy training schools. With masterclass training and advanced hypnotherapy training, it took me 2 years to become fully qualified - ongoing training in new techniques helps to keep me at the leading edge of my profession. At the moment hypnotherapy in the UK is not governed by any one regulatory body as in other countries. Unfortunately this enables some individuals to call themselves hypnotherapists after taking a simple one month correspondence course! Beware - there is no substitute for extensive qualifications and experience. If in doubt - ask! How can I find out more before committing myself? With the exception of smoking cessation therapy I offer a FREE half hour initial consultation. This allows you to outline the help you require and enables me to explain the therapy to you and the fees involved. There is no obligation for you to take it any further. To book just call me on Lichfield (01543) 419491. Appointments are available daily and on certain evenings. |
